Matters

Matters are board-driven multi-step pipelines for managing cases, engagements, projects, or any structured process. Each matter is created from a board template and progresses through defined steps.

Boards and Templates

  • Boards define the steps, properties, and structure that matters follow.
  • Navigate to Matters -> Templates to browse and edit boards.
  • Each board has a sequence of steps drawn from 19 step types (Form, Approval, Document, Sign, Task, and more).
  • Board properties define custom metadata fields (text, date, select, etc.) visible on every matter.

Creating a Matter

  1. Click + New Matter from the matters list or sidebar.
  2. Select a board template.
  3. Enter a title, assignee, priority, and any required board properties.
  4. The matter is created with all steps from the board template.

The matter detail page has 6 tabs:

Matter Layout

The matter detail view uses a structured two-column layout designed for clarity at scale:

  • Header - The matter title, status badge, and primary actions (assign, priority, due date) are pinned at the top of the canvas, always in view as you scroll through steps.
  • Step progress panel - The left column lists all steps in order with completion state, assignee, and type indicators. Click a step to open its detail panel.
  • Contextual sidebar - The right column shows step-level context: data, files, comments, and links relevant to the active step.
  • Step detail panel - When a step is open, its content is divided into three zones:
    • Input - What the step needs (form fields, documents to review, instructions).
    • Processing - Actions in progress (approvals awaiting, agent activity, e-signature status).
    • Output - Results so far (submitted form data, generated documents, signed files).
